Brief Introduction:
Ferrous sulfate is a white and odorlessan inorganic powder, and the chemical formula is FeSO4. Its crystalline hydrate is heptahydrate at room temperature, commonly known as "alum", which is light green crystal. It is weathered in dry air and oxidized to brown basic ferric sulfate on the surface in humid air. It becomes tetrahydrate at 56.6℃ and monohydrate at 65℃.Ferrous sulfate is soluble in water and almost insoluble in ethanol. Its aqueous solution oxidizes slowly in air when it is cold and quickly when it is hot. The addition of alkali or light can accelerate its oxidation. The relative density is (D15)1.897. Ferrous sulfate is irritant. Ferrous sulfate can be used as chromatographic analysis reagent, spot analysis for the determination of platinum, selenium, nitrite and nitrate. Ferrous sulfate can also be used as a reducing agent, ferrite manufacturing, water purification, polymerization catalyst, photographic plate, etc.

Chemical Properties:
Ferrous sulfate is reductive. The decomposition of ferrous sulfate at high heat gives off toxic gases. Ferrous sulfate is easily oxidized to brown and yellow basic ferric sulfate which is difficult to dissolve in water in humid air. An aqueous solution of 10% ferrous sulfate is acidic to litmus (PH is about 3.7). The corresponding crystal hydrate of ferrous sulfate is heptahydrate at room temperature. It loses 3 molecules of water when heated to 70 to 73 ℃, 6 molecules of water when heated to 80 to 123 ℃, and turns into basic ferric sulfate at above 156℃.
Ferrous sulfate aqueous solution is easy to form hexahydrate double salt M2Fe(SO4)2·6H2O with alkali metal sulfate (including ammonium salt), where M is alkali metal ion or ammonium ion.The complex salts of ferrous iron are much more stable, such as ammonium ferrous sulfate (NH4)2Fe(SO4)2·6H2O, also known as Mole salts, which are commonly used as reductants in analytical chemistry. It is soluble in water and glycerin and has some reducibility.
Applications:
Ferrous sulfate can be used to make iron salt, iron oxide pigment, mordant, water purification agent, preservative, disinfectant, etc.
1.Water Treatment
Ferrous sulfate is used in water flocculation purification and to remove phosphate from urban and industrial effluents to prevent eutrophication of water bodies.
2.Reducing Agent
A large amount of ferrous sulfate is used as a reducing agent, mainly to reduce chromate in cement.
3.Medicine
Ferrous sulfate is used in the treatment of iron deficiency anemia. It's also used in food to to add iron. Long-term overuse may cause abdominal pain, nausea, etc.
Ferrous sulfate can also be used as a local astringent and blood tonic for chronic blood loss caused by uterine fibroids.
4.Colorant
A.Ferrous sulfate is used in the production of iron tannic ink and other inks. Ferrous sulfate is also found in wood mordants.
B.Ferrous sulfate can be used to dye concrete a yellow rust color.
C.The woodworker tinted the maple silver with ferrous sulphate.
5. Agriculture
Ferrous sulfate can be used to regulate the ph of soil, and promote the formation of chlorophyll (also known as iron fertilizer), so as to prevent and control the chlorosis of flowers and trees caused by iron deficiency. It is and indispensable element for acidophytes such as sago cycas. It's also used in agriculture as a pesticide, to prevent and control wheat smut, apple and pear scab, and fruit tree rot; it can also be used as fertilizer to remove moss and lichen from tree trunks.
